Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q. When I try to connect CANape to my ECU, the error "CAN: CAN-ERROR: No hardware channel assigned to logical channel 1" is generated. What does this mean?
A. CANape is probably on virtual channels. Move the CANape application to a real channel using the CAN Hardware program in the Control Panel.

Q. How can I find out more information about CCP implementation with respect to using CANape?
A. A sample CCP implementation can be downloaded from the website.
1. Open the download center page.
2. Select the CCP Sample Implementation.
3. This file contains a sample CCP driver implementation with documentation on how to integrate the CCP driver with an existing application.

Q. What National Instruments cards are supported by CANape?
A. CANape supports the older DAQ 700 and 1200 cards as well as the E-Seris. For details on specific cards please see the "NI Driver_01.pdf" document located on the CANape CD.

Q. I am using an older version of CANape 3.0. I updated the CANcardX drivers and now CANape has errors when I try to run it. How do I eliminate the errors?
A. In newer versions of CANape (Version 3.1 and above), the CANcardX driver for the CANape software (candrv32.dll) is automatically updated when the CANcardX drivers are updated. In older CANape versions, the user must copy the candrv32.dll from the driver CD to the CANape\exec directory. If it is also necessary to run the CCPsim ECU Simulator thus the vcand32.dll must be updated in the CANape\CCPsim directory as well.

Q. I purchased a maintenance contract with CANape. How can I expect to receive updates?
A. Customers with maintenance contracts will automatically receive a new CANape CD when the new software is released. For service releases, maintenance customers will be notified via email or a letter informing them that the latest service release can be downloaded from the website.

Q. What is the difference between polling, cyclic and user defined tasks for data acquisition?
A. Polling requires less ECU programming for Data Acquisition because CANape will send a request message for the data. The User defined tasks and the cyclic mode make use of the Synchronous Data Acquisition defined in the CCP specification. This requires that this option be implemented in the ECU. For additional details and an example refer to the "CCP_Test.pdf" located on the CANape CD.

Q. What are the CANape demo limitations?
A. The demo version can be run without CAN hardware or with a CANcardX that is not licensed for CANape.
1. The demo version cannot store configuration files.
2. The measurement duration is limited ("Disk full" message).
3. The number of symbols in the ASAP2 Database is restricted to 50.

Q. I updated my CANape software by downloading the service pack from the website and now CANape is a demo version. How do I get a licenced version again?
A. All service packs must be installed over an existing license copy of CANape. If during the install of the service pack no license information is found, a demo version is created. It is necessary to install your software from the original CD provided by Vector. Then, the service pack must be installed in the same location as the original version.
